  • A West Des Moines refugee said his wife and children remain in eastern Afghanistan after a 6.0 earthquake hit just before midnight on Sunday, cracking their family home and turning neighbors' houses to rubble. His nephew said the damage means the home must be completely rebuilt and the Iowa Afghan Community and Culture Organization will hold a prayer vigil—he added that being away from his loved ones has increased his stress.  Local 5

  • Iowa State Fair officials announced the 2026 theme 'Fair Spirit'—a nod to the 1976 bicentennial fair that celebrated Iowa heritage and will embrace future innovations—and set the event for Aug. 13 to Aug. 23.  KCCI

  • Central Iowa 11-year-old Evie Ward sees blurred vision and uses myopia therapy contacts by day, glasses by night, and therapy drops to slow her worsening myopia—an approach recommended by optometrist Dr. Jenessa Lock of Lumen Eye Care.
