COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last year the Iowa State Fair broke attendance records by drawing 1,182,682 visitors during its 11-day run, setting a new high for the event's 170-year history. Fair officials plan to track daily attendance as the fair returns Aug. 7—hoping this year surpasses last year’s record.  KCCI
  • Following severe weekend storms, Twin Anchors Farm stand in Colo was damaged with some produce lost and operations temporarily paused—Sean McGuire said repairs will let the stand reopen soon. Brenda McGuire, who has run the family operation since the 1960s, noted the stand has long served local families.  Local 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An Iowa State Patrol trooper saved a cyclist from California who collapsed along the RAGBRAI route Monday—bystanders performed CPR for 10 minutes until the trooper used his AED to restore the rider’s pulse before he was taken to a Sioux City hospital.  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A tornado in Story County clipped the southwest edge of Gilbert last Saturday and left a visible damage scar on four miles of farmland and trees (comparing satellite images from last Monday). The National Weather Service of Des Moines will release full details and the EF classification today.  Local 5
  • The Iowa DNR issued a recommendation on Friday for residents to avoid swimming at 12 state beaches because high E. coli levels could cause stomach aches, diarrhea & vomiting. The agency said it tests beach water every Tuesday and Wednesday and will update its website on Friday with the latest report.  Local 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Barb Heenan, an Iowa woman, beat a grim scleroderma diagnosis and short life expectancy by riding RAGBRAI on oxygen tanks before receiving a double lung transplant. Now more than halfway through her year-long recovery, she plans to return next year to ride the entire event — taking one pedal at a time.  KCCI
