- ➤ Central Iowa Water Works started a lawn-watering ban on June 12 because high nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers and higher water demand prompted Stage 3 restrictions; the ban is now in its second month. Executive Director Tami Madsen told KCCI Investigates that the measure is part of a long-standing water shortage plan designed to protect safe tap water for 600,000 customers — a strategy established more than a decade ago.
