Good morning, Ames. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 25th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Communities across central Iowa will host fireworks shows on dates from June 27 to September 19 that follow local events like Iowa Cubs home games and summer festivals—residents can check the schedule for times and venues, including a display in Ames at dusk.  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Panorama Association said a faulty valve caused a leak late Monday night that dropped lake levels by 21 inches and the dam was fixed early Tuesday. Officials expect rain and a replacement part to bring levels back to normal by the Fourth of July—while the dam continues to meet its 20 cubic feet per second discharge requirement—ensuring proper river flow.  KCCI
  • Heavy rain fell in the last 24 hours and briefly lowered nitrate levels before farm run-off caused them to rise, officials said from a gauge on the Raccoon River near Van Meter. The extra runoff may extend the lawn watering ban and nitrate levels are expected to drop steadily from July into August—if trends follow past years.  KCCI
  • Central Iowa Water Works makes drinking water safe by removing nitrates that are then processed at Des Moines’ water reclamation facility where bacteria break them down into renewable natural gas and a nutrient-rich cake used as fertilizer on nearby farmland—upcoming upgrades are set to increase nitrate removal to 85% in four years.  KCCI
  • Ottumwa is blending water from a former gravel pit with river water to lower nitrate levels for its 25,000 residents — Tim Albert of Ottumwa Water and Hydro said the system works now but its duration will depend on the weather.  KCCI
