Good morning, Ames. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 24th of June.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Authorities charged Ashley Taylor, aged 41, of Slater with vehicular homicide and operating while intoxicated after she drove the wrong way near Ames on May 28 and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Christian Royston, aged 26, who died at the scene. KCCI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa Department of Education announced that over 500 locations will serve free summer meals to children under 18—following over 3 million meals and snacks provided last summer. Local 5
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Central Iowa water quality experts say at-home nitrate test kits are unreliable because they test for the full nitrate ion while water utilities measure only nitrate-nitrogen, leading some home tests to show over 40 parts per million even though Des Moines Water Works reports levels between 8 and 8.24 mg/L. Experts advise residents to rely on the more precise methods used by water facilities (the EPA deems water safe until levels reach 10 mg/L) while a lawn watering ban remains in effect in many areas. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting July 1, a new state law will ban cell phone use while driving unless the phone is in hands-free or voice-activated mode. Ankeny police say officers will issue written warnings during a six-month grace period and fines will begin on Jan. 1 for further violations. KCCI
- ➤ The Iowa DOT is installing new ramp gates on northbound ramps in Ankeny starting this week to keep drivers off I-35 during events like blizzards, ice storms, bad accidents and floods. The plan was set after last winter's shutdown between Ames and Ankeny and will be managed by DOT and local law enforcement — the work is expected to finish by the end of the month. KCCI
