Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 19th of June.
Good morning, Ames.
🏘️ Community
Johnston Partnership is facing challenges with the new Healthy Kids Iowa summer meal program as increased demand strains its cooling and storage systems—Executive Director Andrea Cook said her pantry has struggled to adjust.
She noted that the lack of input from state leaders has made it harder for her team to serve local families.
🌲 Environment
During a news conference Tuesday, Des Moines Water Works CEO Ted Corrigan said that more than 90% of the nitrate in central Iowa water comes from row crop fertilizer runoff — with Van Meter farmer Ryan Marquardt urging local groups to work together on reducing the problem.
🏛️ Government
Central Iowa Water Works said that splash pads and spraygrounds may reopen today because they use only 1 million gallons of water daily—much less than the 40 million gallons used for lawn watering, which remains banned for 600,000 customers due to high nitrate levels in local rivers. The city of Des Moines announced its spraygrounds will open today with reduced hours and Johnston’s splash pad will operate with limited times.
