COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Iowa school districts and local organizations are offering free summer meals to children under 18 through USDA partnerships and community donations. Programs will run on weekdays from early June until August at several locations including Des Moines, Altoona, Johnston, Urbandale, Waukee and West Des Moines — with meals served on-site to help address food insecurity.  Local 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Around 6:30 this morning, the Iowa Department of Transportation reported a crash near 380th Street north of Story City that blocked the left shoulder on southbound I-35 — drivers should exercise caution around stalled vehicles and emergency responders.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iowan astronaut Peggy Whitson was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame at the Kennedy Space Center on Saturday. She worked with NASA for 37 years (flying three space flights, doing 10 spacewalks and spending 675 days in space).  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A construction project at NW Beaver Drive and Iowa 415 is blocking the road used to reach the bridge over Saylorville Lake that is one mile long. Crews started work today to convert an intersection with stop signs at all four corners into a roundabout to ease congestion—detours are in place and closures will shift in mid-August, with the project expected to finish by Thanksgiving.  KCCI
  • A baby girl born on May 23 is now under the care of Iowa HHS under the Safe Haven Act—she will be placed with a foster family until a permanent home is found—and she is the third infant relinquished to the department this year.  Local 5
