Good morning, Ames.

Iowa authorities reported over 300 ATV and UTV crashes since 2023 — with 35 fatal ones, including three this year — and blame risky driving at intersections, speeding, and underage operators for the trend.

Gov. Reynolds signed 17 bills into law yesterday, including one that requires Iowa high schoolers to pass the U.S. Citizenship Test to graduate and another that limits DEI programs at public institutions.

A separate law changes the bullying definition by removing a list of traits and also gives state employees paid parental leave after three years of work—measures aimed at strengthening civic and family support statewide.

The Iowa National Guard will hold 24 send-off ceremonies from today through May 30 to honor roughly 1,800 soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team as they deploy to the Middle East for Operation Inherent Resolve—local events in cities such as Boone, Camp Dodge, and Le Mars invite community attendance and support. Iowans can attend these ceremonies to show respect and gratitude for the service members—each event marking a key step in preparing the troops for their mission.
