- ➤ The Ames Animal Shelter is crowded with animals and staff say kitten season will soon fill all kennels as creatures are kept in hallways at the 30-year-old shelter. The shelter is launching a $7.5 million campaign with $6 million already from city funds and community gifts, and a city-purchased building will undergo a full gut renovation over two years (adding more space for dogs) as it seeks another $1.5 million (to meet rising demand).
