  • Hy-Vee announced it will remove bar service at its central Iowa Market Grille locations on May 1 as part of updates to create a consistent dining experience—most servers have been reassigned to other roles. Customers can order made-to-order breakfast and lunch at a counter until 2 p.m. and dinner options until 8 p.m. while dining in.  Local 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nearly 500 U.S. Cellular workers in Iowa will be laid off in June as the company sells its wireless operations to T-Mobile. More than 140 workers in central Iowa, including 39 in Johnston, will lose their jobs — Iowa Workforce Development said.  KCCI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Iowa Association of School Boards said 140 school districts may raise property taxes to cover budget gaps as state aid provides a 2% increase per pupil and a 5% boost for transportation costs with final budgets due April 30 — a move driven by limited funding. Some districts, including Des Moines Public Schools and Ankeny Community School District, are waiting for details on supplemental aid — which will guide staffing and program decisions.  Local 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After USDA cut more than $1 billion in funding in March, the Food Bank of Iowa canceled 16 truckloads—400,000 pounds—of food and will spend over $1 million to cover the shortfall. The cuts have already reduced food variety for partners like Bidwell Pantry and affected hundreds of families each week.  Local 5
