Good morning, Ames. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 7th of April.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 100 Iowa State graphic design students took part in a Design-A-Thon on Saturday – an eight-hour event with 18 local nonprofits – where they designed websites, logos or flyers. Organizer Patrick Finley said the event — the first of its kind at Iowa State — gave students hands-on experience with guidance from a professional mentor.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S.S. Iowa—a new fast-attack nuclear submarine nearly 400 ft long and 78,000 tons—was commissioned Saturday in Groton, and its name honors our state. Gov. Kim Reynolds and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks attended the ceremony and thanked the crew who will soon put Iowa to work on the world stage.  KCCI
  • Property tax assessments were mailed to Iowans after public hearings, and the letters say you can ask for an informal review until April 25 or protest until April 30 if you think your property value is wrong. The assessments—done by county assessors and sometimes by a third party—will affect fiscal year 2027 starting July 1 next year.  KCCI
