Good morning, Ames. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 3rd of April.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a new hands-free driving law after years of support to keep people safe. The law stops drivers from holding their phones unless in hands-free mode and will take effect on July 1 with warnings for six months — then $100 fines for later violations.  Local 5
  • Iowa parents Deric and Kathy Kidd, who lost their 17-year-old son to fentanyl poisoning in July, fully support House File 792 that would treat fentanyl distribution causing a death as first-degree murder. The bill passed the Iowa House last week and must clear Senate subcommittee and full committee hearings by Friday — a key deadline during the 2025 legislative session.  KCCI
  • House File 887 would remove a $20,000 fee needed to create a birth center—after 41 maternity wards closed since 2000. It passed in the House and will be discussed by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee today—if approved by Friday, it will become law.  Local 5
